Why is Coventry Cycle Works promoting this event?

One reason is that we are serious believers in the fine characteristics of recumbent bicycles for almost all types of cycling; they are particularly well-suited to long-distances - riding for hours... or days... without any of the types of discomfort typically associated with cyling.  For pure "toodling about" in the country, or going fast-as-the-wind, they are a joy to ride, two-wheels or three.  RAAM showcases the speed of recumbents, but it also calls to light the comfort in which the racers tackle that which is the toughest race in the WORLD, covering over 3,000 miles, non-stop, day and night, over 170,000 feet of elevation gain from San Diego, California to Annapolis, Maryland... read all about it here

Having recumbents excelling in a race of this caliber gets them more into the eye of the mainstream, so that more people will discover that cycling can be pure bliss. These are NOT just bikes for "people who can no longer ride traditional bikes"; these are bicycles for ALL people to ride so their bodies never get beaten up to begin with... and additionally, they DO serve the needs of people with other challenges nicely, but that's just icing on the cake of what they're about!

Another reason for our support is that Coventry's owner, Marilyn Hayward, is a distance cyclist and is also a long-time survivor of fibro sarcoma, and has competed in three RAAM-Qs (Race Across AMerica qualifiers) at Bike Sebring and crewed 2x for Race Across Oregon (RAO), the toughest RAAM qualifer there is. It was at her first RAO in 2006 that she met David Bradley, who will be the crew captain of 2012s Team RAAM Sarcoma, Powered by Bacchetta Bikes.  Marilyn & David became great friends through cycling events but, more than that, they share the bond of being sarcoma survivors.. and they're still out there, doing things that some people have said they wouldn't be able to do.

We would like to make people aware of the often mis-diagnosed and seldom-heard-of sarcomas, in all of their evil "persuasions" and hope that you might choose to donate to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative to help fund research for a cure.

Watch for Marilyn (aka Miz Tweety) and David (aka Sir Javid) at the 2012 "Bike Sebring" RAAM-Q race, where "we have goals!" and then watch as David once again, performs as one of THE most professional and sought-after RAAM crew captains in the nation, giving his all to & for "Team RAAM Sarcoma, Powered by Bacchetta Bikes".

Wishing you joy, health, blessings, and a day spent recumbent.
